As well as being one of the most popular safari destinations in Africa, the Maasai Mara is also home to Maasai tribes.
If you are visiting the Maasai Mara, you'll almost certainly be offered a day trip to visit a tribe...and it is an experience not to be missed! Alongside Tribal Voice Communications (a local NGO), we helped to ensure that Maasai communities earned a fair living from the tourism.
Previously driver guides had pocketed entrance fees to the vilages, but now, thanks to a fair ticketing system, entrance fees go directly to the hands of the community that you are visiting. It has helped to increase the Maasai's income by 800%!
Rather than paying driver guides directly, holidaymakers can buy tickets for excursions from lodges. If you are not sure where your money for the excursion is going, ask at your lodge.
