We've been working with Thomson and First Choice to bring holidaymakers a taste of the real Mexico, with locally made Maya 'jungle jams'.
A jam making co-operative in Chumpon produce jams from papaya, pineapple and pittaya (cactus fruit) and sell them to hotels. A jam making kitchen was set up in the jungle, and the co-operative were trained with the business skills needed to run a successful company in the future.
The jungle jams, first served for breakfast at Thomson's Sensatori Resort in Cancun in 2009, bring guests a flavour of the Mexican jungle...
This womens co-operative are now able to support themselves and their families by selling the jams to hotels, and tourism businesses. Previously, people left inland communities in search of work on the coast.
You can help wherever you are on holiday by looking out for great local produce, and asking your hotel if they serve locally sourced food and drink.
The jams are currently being served at the following hotels in the Cancun area: Thomson's Sensatori Mexico Resort, The Azul Beach, El Dorado Royale, El Dorado Maroma and El Dorado Seaside.
