There were some fantastic beach cleans during the Summer 2015 - congratulations to everyone who took part!
Despite the very hot weather, 18 people and a dog called ‘Paws’ took part, collecting 52 bags of rubbish. The majority of the litter collected was plastic bottles and bottle caps, as well as cigarette butts, food wrappers and glass. Clean-ups also took place on the sister island, Providenciales.
Karen Whitt, President of the Turks & Caicos Hotel and Tourism Association (TCHTA) said,
The only way TCI can continue to be Beautiful by Nature is if we all practise to keep our surroundings clean, not only on Earth Day but every single day of the year.
At this Crete hotel, 30 people came together to collect eight bags of rubbish. A guest who took part said:
I had the chance to enjoy my holiday but also contribute to a noble cause!
The Pestana Hotel Dom João II got together with guests to involve around 20 people in their beach clean:
Our team has joined forces and have taken part in beach cleans, removing waste. This includes bottles, plastics, empty sun creams wich are collected and separated for recycling. With this Eco-event we have demonstrated commitment to sustainability and involving staff and customers in our efforts.
The morale was extremely high and it was clear that everyone involved felt the power of being able to make a difference. In total we collected approx. 20kg of waste and was able to recycle 60% of this.
We took this opportunity not only to clean the beach but to educate everyone involved on the importance of environmental protection.
